How To: Jailbreak iPhone 3.0 Using RedSn0w

Last night I decided to jailbreak my first generation iPhone again. I’m running the new 3.0 firmware on it now, so the process has changed a bit. I’ll be using a program called RedSn0w. This guide will work with the first generation iPhone and the iPhone 3g. I’m using Windows 7 x64 RC for this.

  • Before doing anything, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and the latest firmware 3.0 installed on your iPhone.
  • Download RedSn0w and a copy of the ipsw firmware file for your iPhone from here. Make sure you download the correct firmware version.
  • Unzip and launch RedSn0w.
  • Click “browse” and select the 3.0 firmware you downloaded.
  • Once the firmware has been successfully identified, click “next”.
  • For this step it depends on what OS you’re performing this on. If you’re using an x64 OS, you can only select the option to install Cydia. If you pick to install Cydia and Icy both, the process will fail. (I have tested this to be sure.) So in my case, I just selected to install Cydia, then clicked next. You can install Icy through Cydia after the jailbreak is complete.
  • Make sure your iPhone is plugged into the computer and that the phone is off. Click “next”.
  • RedSn0w will then guide you to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Hold down the power button for 2 seconds. Without releasing the power button, also hold down the home button for 10 seconds. Without releasing the home button, release the power button but keep holding the home button for 30 seconds.
  • If done correctly, your iPhone should reboot and the jailbreak process should start. This step may take up to 15-20 minutes so be patient. It takes longer if installing both Icy and Cydia.
  • Once this process is over, you will get a message saying that it is “done!”
  • Click the “finish” button and reboot your iPhone. The reboot may take up to 10 minutes so again, be patient.
  • That’s all there is to it. You should now have a Cydia icon on your springboard. Follow this guide to install Icy if you haven’t already done so.
